Principles of Design Zine
Karrie Arana, Sunflower Zine, 2022
Students create a foldable zine, which visually displays the 7 Principles of Design. In each panel of the zine, students create different illustrations of their chosen object using mixed media. First, students choose a theme for their zine and use that theme throughout. Using a variety of media, students display each of the Principles of Design as they intentionally create with the Elements of Art (line, shape, form, value, texture, color, and space). For instance, a student may create contrast with black ink using line and shape.
I love this project in so many ways. It breaks down the Principles of Design and the Elements of Art in a visually. It helps students make intentional choices with their art while teaching them proper art vocabulary. It's great practice and also encourages students to make their own art making decisions by expressing their creativity through a variety of media.
This project usually takes students one week to a week and half of class time to complete. We conclude our zine making project with an Artist Statement and a peer critique.
Materials:
• Laminated artworks for observation & identification
• Zine template (below)
• 9” x 12” white drawing paper or larger
Scissors
• Mixed media for freedom of choice
• Zine examples
Zine Template (above) shows how to fold with solid lines separating the 8 panels. The dashed line in the middle shows the cutting line. A simple book fold, or "hamburger fold" will allow students to easily cut on the line between the 4 middle panels.
